Recovery for Redbirds

Recovery for Redbirds is a student group that is intended for the following individuals:

  • Students in recovery or those who have stopped using substances/engaging in a compulsive behavior.
  • Students who are concerned about their use of substances and/or a compuslive behavioral pattern and are contemplating change.
  • Students who are impacted by a family member, loved one, or friend's substance use/compulsive behavior.
  • Students who are allies.

Mission

Recovery for Redbirds strives to provide a supportive and inclusive environment for students concerned with recovery from addiction or compulsive behavioral patterns.

Vision

The group will:

  • Plan and engage in substance-free socialization activities, including BBQs, movie nights, sober birthday parties, bowling parties, sporting games, and more.
  • Provide a peer-based supportive environment for those in recovery or seeking recovery.
  • Engage in service projects throughout the year, giving back to the Illinois State University and local communities.
  • Educate the campus on substance use disorders and other forms of addiction, the effects of substance use, and the lifestyle of recovery, along with confronting stigmas related to addiction and recovery.
  • Assist the campus in celebrating Recovery Month in September.
  • Identify and train allies across campus who can support students who want to discuss substance use, recovery, or a re-emergence of symptoms.

Opportunities

Recovery for Redbirds is a voluntary opportunity for students who want to establish a community of support around their recoveries from alcohol, drugs, and/or other compulsive behavior or want to explore these areas of their lives. It is a peer support-based program; it is not a program that replaces the need for treatment or clinical support (i.e. formal treatment, therapy).

Based on the interests of students involved, Recovery for Redbirds can offer many opportunities for students, including but not limited to:

  • Recovery meetings
  • Health, emotional regulation, recovery maintenance, and professional skill development
  • Peer and professional mentoring
  • Sober networking and social activities
  • Advocacy opportunities to combat addiction stigma
  • Service to the community
  • Referrals for other services/programs, both internal and external to the university
  • A weekly recovery meal
