Benefits

The Student Health Insurance Plan is a platinum-level Open Choice PPO, offering nationwide and international coverage. Fully ACA-compliant, it meets federal requirements and can serve as primary insurance or work with another plan for up to 100% coverage.

Benefits at a Glance

  • Covers illnesses and injuries on or off campus, including abroad
  • Preventive and contraceptive care (ACA-required)
  • Low $50 annual deductible (waived if you have primary insurance)
  • No annual or lifetime maximum
  • “Stop Loss” provision limits eligible out-of-pocket costs to $1,250/year
  • Helps cover deductibles, copays, coinsurance, out-of-network, and non-covered charges from other insurance
  • Vision Discount: automatic savings through the EyeMed Vision Care Network
  • OnCall International Coverage: 24/7 worldwide medical and travel assistance, evacuation/repatriation, and a $10,000 accidental death benefit

Coverage Highlights

Most services are covered at:

  • In-network: 80 - 100% of negotiated rates
  • Out-of-network: 80 - 100% of reasonable and customary expenses

Examples of covered services:

  • Hospital inpatient/outpatient care
  • Emergency room (100% for injury or life-threatening illness)
    • Non-emergency care in an emergency room is not covered.
  • Surgery, anesthesia, physician visits, and lab/X-ray
  • Mental health and chiropractic care (limit 25 visits/year)
  • Pregnancy, contraceptives, and ACA-required preventive care
  • Prescriptions for covered conditions

Using Providers

The plan is an Open Choice PPO underwritten by Aetna Life Insurance Company. Students are encouraged to use in-network providers to minimize out-of-pocket costs, but benefits are available for out-of-network care. Search “Open Choice PPO” under Student Health Medical Plans to find participating providers.

Optional Plans

Aetna Student Health offers optional insurance and discount plans that can be purchased for enhanced coverage, including:

  • Optional Vision Insurance - Adds coverage for eye exams, glasses, and contacts.
  • Optional Dental Insurance - Covers routine and major dental services.
  • Optional Dental Discount Program - Provides savings at participating dentists locally and nationwide.
